Larger than ExpectedSep 15, 2010
By Madison and Nathan's Mom As with all Lauri products, the quality is excellent. I was pleased by the variety of shapes, sizes and colors and was pleasantly surprised by how LARGE the sorting tray was- we'll be using this for lots of sorting activities in addition to the pieces it comes with. There is also a blank center wheel that you can use to make your own sorting activities- we'll probably use it for money, counting bears, etc. I'm very pleased!

plenty sturdy for my kids, and entertainingApr 14, 2009
By medmom I bought this for my 24-month-old twins. Unlike the other reviewer, we've found the sorting pieces to be very sturdy. My daughter helped me punch the crepe rubber pieces out of the rubber strips that they came in. (Reserve the strips to use as puzzles - that's my daughter's favorite way to play with this toy!) She tries to fold the pieces, but they've held up under everything, with no signs of wear yet. And they're washable.
My son has played with this a little, but it's mostly my daughter who enjoys it. We've sorted the pieces by color and by shape so far. Sometimes I just set out a few handfuls of shapes, so it's not overwhelming to her. (There are 200+ shapes, big and small sizes of trains, ducks, trucks, cats, dogs, and bears, in several colors.) Especially when my daughter is doing the puzzle strips, it helps if I find the pieces that fit, so she's only working with those six items.
We've sort of ignored the disks that sit in the middle. They'll grow into that later. Usually I just put the first set of shapes into the right sections, and then they know where to put the others. Also, on the disk - my one minor complaint - the notches are in the wrong spots, so the separating lines in the disks don't line up with the separating lines in the sorter sections. We can still use it easily, by setting the disk on top of the notches. Again, we aren't using the disks much yet anyway, and the rest of the set seems well-made.
I'm looking forward to teaching my kids colors and counting with this set, but for now, they're just having fun exploring the shapes and textures and which shapes match each other. It has already been a great learning/teaching toy, but mostly, it has been a fun, gentle activity to do together.

Tons of Educational FunMar 01, 2011
By Amanda L. Davis I have been looking for a toy for sorting purposes for a longtime and settled on this because it seemed to be the most interesting and comnprehensive. It comes with lots of different shapes in different colors and 2 sizes. They are trains, bears, ducks, trucks, etc, so I think these will capture kids' attention more than other sets. I love one reviewer's idea of keeping the strips they come in to use as puzzles, so I will be doing that for sure. The idea is a huge hit with my kids already. One reviewer said something about the notches of the discs not being placed right so the lines on them don't match with the compartments of the tray, but mine doesn't have this problem. The company must have made an improvement. Over all, this toy is wonderful and I would definitely recommend it.

Not happy with quality.Jan 02, 2008
By Rhonda M. Crouse This was the most important toy on my Christmas list for my daughter. I was so excited when she opened it and she really loved it and wanted to play with it right away. However, I made her put it back and play with something else. The shapes are made of foam NOT plastic like the description says. I could have cut these out of foam myself and bought some bowls to put them in. The quality is not good. If you are expecting to get 3 demensional shapes don't buy this. My daughter probably would have loved it just the same, but it will not last long. I'm returning it and getting one of the other sorting toys that are actually 3 demensional shapes.
