I don't recommend this itemOct 09, 2009
By A. Long I read the reviews of Melissa & Doug's earlier instrument puzzle, and I hoped that the 2009 version would have addressed the earlier version's problems. It didn't. The music still plays on its own in the middle of the night, and the instument sounds are not realistic at all. The drum and the xylophone aren't bad, but I can't tell the difference between the trumpet and the violin. Those are two instuments that should not sound alike. However, in all fairness to Melissa & Doug, my kids do seem to enjoy playing with the puzzle. Just don't expect them to learn instrument sounds from it, and you'll want to pop out the batteries before you go to bed.

Don't BotherMar 12, 2010
By Reuven Meir I was shocked at how bad this toy was, considering Melissa and Doug's high quality standards. I can't believe they let this one out without doing some more work on it. Any instrument piece held over any picture on the puzzle sets off random music. Actually, any instrument held within 2 feet of the puzzle sets off the music. It's the same tune (half of the 'Old MacDonald' refrain) for every piece, which is really annoying to hear over and over and over again. The sounds are completely out of touch. None, with the exception of one or two, sound like they're supposed to. Many of them sound just like the others. Uneducational if you want your toddler to have a better understanding of what instruments are supposed to sound like. Overall, we had high hopes and are totally disappointed.

Like it.Jan 27, 2011
By audrey This item is cute. The only complaint I have is that if you cover the slot with any peice it will go off. It doesn't have to be the right piece for that slot.
Don't expect realistic or accurate soundsApr 30, 2012
By C. Beasley The music this thing plays is really horrible, it sounds like basic MIDI stuff. The sounds rarely sound like the instrument they're supposed to be, and they all play the same few notes. All told, a huge disappointment. I was expecting the guitar to sound like a guitar, the piano to sound like a piano, etc. Instead they all sound like a 1980s video game.
Fun, only one small problemMar 15, 2012
By kchaos85 My son does really like this puzzle. He loves music and I love how you can hear how each instrument sounds. The only complaint I have is that the violin doesn't work. I supposed I could have returned it and received a new one, but it seems like too much work, and he doesn't seem to notice. Overall good product though.
